Willunga Basin Trail
The Willunga Basin Trail is a 130 km walking trail, under construction, around and across the Willunga Basin. It takes walkers through a diverse landscape of bushland, forests, vineyards, almond groves, parks and beaches connecting the townships of McLaren Vale, McLaren Flat, Kangarilla, and Willunga and the suburbs of Aldinga, Port Willunga, Maslin Beach, Moana and Seaford.
The idea of a trail came from Friends of Willunga Basin in 2009, as a way to show the extent of the Basin. Initial exploration led to a group of local walkers finding a route which used unmade road reserves, parks, forests and quiet roads.
Willunga Basin Trail Inc
In 2016 Willunga Basin Trail Inc (WBT Inc) was formed with the aim of establishing the trail and seeking funding for the infrastructure. A deputation to the City of Onkaparinga in February 2016 received the unanimous support of the Councillors which led to inclusion of the trail in the Trails and Cycling Strategic Management Plan in June 2017.
At the end of 2018 WBT Inc received $79,000 from the Office of Recreation Sport and Racing to build the trail over 2 years, since extended to 3 years. Further funding has been received from Onkaparinga Council, Bendigo Bank and most recently from the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board.
Work started on building the Trail in 2019. Three times a week volunteers are installing posts, stiles and creek crossings and lightly clearing vegetation to create a safe walking track. Work includes weed control and plantings. Liaison is ongoing with major partner City of Onkaparinga and with other partners, Parks SA and Forestry SA.

Willunga Basin Trail Walkers
From the initial exploration to find a route has come a walking group, the Willunga Basin Trail Walkers which is affiliated with Walking SA. Weekly walks are led on the trail, in the local area and neighbouring regions and are free to members of Willunga Basin Trail Inc.
