January 2024 News Update

Tourism Development Bowering Hill Rd and Tuit Rd

Council has received a development application for the construction of a recreation facility (a wave pool) and tourist accommodation, together with shop, office, wellness studio and food & beverage facilities located within the Tourism Development Zone, which encourages tourism related uses. The land uses proposed in the application generally appear consistent with the zone objectives.

Accordingly, as per the designated assessment pathway under the Design Code, there will be neither any public notification of the application, nor any rights of appeal for anyone should approval be granted.

Against this however sits the Character Preservation (McLaren Vale) Act 2012 (the Act) and the “character values” it defines. In FOWB’s view, the proposed development is not consistent with those values and, on this basis, contends that planning consent should be refused. We have written to the Mayor expressing this view, as can be seen here: Tourism Development Tuit Rd Aldinga Jan 24

Aldinga Biplanes Development Application

FOWB has made a public representation to a proposal for a significant facility (five hangar-sized buildings and an airstrip for Aldinga Biplanes at 141 Colville Road, Aldinga. The proposal is in immediate proximity to the already established Aldinga Airfield, and the flight paths of the two airfields would intersect. FOWB opposes the development application which, it submits, fails the land use test for development within the Rural Zone on first principles, and is also fundamentally unsafe. You can read FOWB’s representation here: Adelaide Biplanes Airfield Aldinga Jan 2024

For information, a recent application to develop a container-based self-storage facility, again on Colville Road and about which FOWB also made a representation, was recently refused consent by the Council Assessment Panel.

The Beach is not a Road Campaign

Bridget Gardiner reported she has received a response from Council to a recent petition, addressing new regulations relating to use of jet skis, vehicle access to the beach, and other traffic restrictions for Sellicks and Aldinga Beaches. For more information about these changes see Council’s webpage Beaches. Council has also established a webpage for the plovers Hooded Plovers protection zones.

Extra traffic controls, as well as SAPOL and Council rangers will be in place to monitor beaches over summer. There will be a QR code on signs at the beach ramp to enable reporting of illegal jet ski and motor boat activity. If you observe a recreational vessel (including jet skis) engaging in unsafe activities you can also report all non-compliant motorised water craft behaviour here: Report Boat Incidents.
